Work on project is going on at a fast pace after the shifting of a petrol pump last week, officials said
The much-delayed L-shaped underpass at Iffco Chowk, which is likely to greatly facilitate the movement of vehicles going from the road near HUDA City Centre towards Sikanderpur, will be ready for use by February 18, officials working on the project said on Monday.
Work on the project is going on at a fast pace after the shifting of a petrol pump last week, the officials said. While the digging work at the site and concretising of the base of the remaining part of the ramp have been completed, the work on lighting the entire underpass will begin from Tuesday.
“If there is no rain and weather remains normal, the entire work would be completed very soon. The underpass would be ready for use by February 18,” Saurabh Singal, consultant to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), said.
At present, vehicles going from HUDA City Centre road towards Sikanderpur have to take a sharp U-turn at Iffco Chowk, which leads to jams during peak hours. Transport experts say that the underpass will also reduce cases of accidents on this stretch.
In order to expedite the work at the Iffco Chowk petrol pump site, the authorities deployed two excavators, 10 dumpers, and 45 fitters for cutting the steel bars. “We have also deployed 10 engineers and additional workforce
as our focus is to complete the work at the earliest. Right now the steel fabrication work is ongoing,” Singhal said.
Shifting of the petrol pump remained stuck for almost two years as its owner, Sukhjit Mann, had approached the court seeking an alternative site for her filling station. It was only after a protracted legal battle that Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) allotted Mann a site on Golf Course Road after directions from the Supreme Court. The
matter was resolved on January 28.
As a lot of moisture and other dirt has got collected on the entire underpass due to delay, officials said that they have also pressed workers into action to clean it. “From Tuesday, fixing of lights will start. The painting work shall also start, once the surface is cleaned . The canopy for the remaining portion of the underpass is being built at the main workshop of the contractor at Rajiv Chowk,” Singhal said.
